"It is with deep satisfaction that I recommend Gradys Painting and Plastering & Construction. Once you’ve finished your inspection and determined the state of your brakes (either they need replacing or don’t), put the wheel back on the hub, properly secure it, then lower your car back to the ground. Or, if the brake pads have been worn down to the metal base, it’s safe to assume both the pads and the rotor need replacing.īring it back down. The lining of the pads should be no less than 1/4 of an inch in depth. The brake caliper should have an inspection hole, or a wide slot in the caliper’s cover where you can clearly see the brake pads resting on the rotor. First grab it and give it a shake to make sure it’s bolted on tight - sometimes the bolts holding the calipers on can loosen over time, causing damage to the whole system.Ĭheck the pads. The caliper is the component that hugs the rotor and houses the brake pads. If there’s heavy rust, scoring or grooves around the rotor, it’s a clear sign they’re in need of a change.Ĭheck the caliper. In the event you have vented or cross-drilled rotors (common on performance brakes), the flat areas of the rotor that come in contact with the pad should still be smooth as glass. The disk, or rotor, should be smooth to the touch. With prudent driving habits, quality brake pads designed for your car model and regular maintenance checks, you can prolong the lifespan of your brakes. This range is wide and can vary depending on the variables mentioned above. Unless you have a fancy hydraulic lift, jack up your car and check one wheel at a time, but don’t forget to use wheel blocks and jack stands for extra support and safety.Ĭheck the disk. In general, you should expect to replace most brake pads between 30,000 to 90,000 km. You won’t be able to get the line of sight you need on the calipers and rotors unless you take the wheel off. To figure out if your pads or rotors need swapping, here are a few quick and easy tips to follow. But it’s best to change your brakes before they get to that ear-piercing point, because at that level they’ve already lost some performance. When the pad material gets low enough, the indicator drags on the rotor and creates a high-pitched squeal like nails on a chalk board. Most brake pads should have a metal wear indicator built in, making it easy for you to tell when they need to be changed. We shouldn’t have to stress the idea that brakes play a key role when it comes to your car and Newton’s first law, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on what kind of condition your brake pads and rotors are in - on a regular basis. The importance of wrapping your wheels in the right rubber may be one of those things that’s lost on the general public (not you, of course), but the importance of proper brakes is just common sense. After a sleepless night, it can be harder for you to concentrate on work or school, and you’re more at risk for accidents or injuries.Ī lack of sleep or poor sleep can raise your risk for anxiety disorders or make them worse. It also helps remove toxins from your brain that build up while you’re awake. Sleep helps you learn and form new memories. And we know that sleep is very important for your health. Insomnia can also be a side effect of some medications.ġ of 6 Why is it important to treat sleep anxiety? But there are many others, including certain medical conditions and lifestyle habits, like drinking too much caffeine. Sleep anxiety (and anxiety in general) is one possible cause of insomnia. But insomnia can also be chronic, meaning you could have trouble sleeping for months. You may have trouble sleeping because of a stressful situation, and your insomnia may only last for a few days or weeks. Moodiness or irritability because of fatigue Injuries or accidents related to being tired Trouble concentrating or remembering things Waking up early and not being able to get back to sleep Insomnia is a health condition where you have trouble going to sleep, staying asleep, or both. The sleep-deprived brain produces more stress hormones like cortisol, which can make you feel more on edge. Researchers have also found that the brains of people who haven’t slept well look very similar to the brains of people with anxiety disorders. You go to bed that night, and the cycle starts again. You wake up the next day feeling even more anxious and stressed. You go to bed, feeling anxious about getting to sleep.Īs you lay in bed, your anxiety makes it harder to fall and stay asleep. Here’s an example of how anxiety and insomnia can create a cycle of not sleeping well: This means that anxiety and insomnia can make each other worse. Anxiety can cause sleeping problems, but insomnia can also cause daytime anxiety. This is because stress and anxiety can disrupt sleep.īut the truth is, it can be hard to tell which comes first: anxiety or insomnia. And as we’ll see below, sleep anxiety can actually make your nighttime sleep worse - by creating an ongoing cycle of anxiety and insomnia. Though sleep anxiety isn’t an “official” medical diagnosis, a poor night of sleep can definitely make you feel more stressed the next day. After all, humans have evolved over thousands of years to be great sleepers. And for some people, sleep anxiety can become so severe that it actually starts to get in the way of daily life.īut here’s the good news: Sleep anxiety is common and treatable. It’s kind of like stage fright, but for sleeping. Sleep anxiety is worry or fear about going to bed, or about falling or staying asleep. If this sounds familiar - and you worry a lot about sleeping - you might have sleep anxiety. You may even start to feel like you’re “bad” at sleeping or dread getting into bed at night. Trevor James alto flutes are some of the best on the market, at least for their price. However, I love how it has an ergonomic left hand so that my hand and arm don’t have to stretch as far. Unfortunately, some of the lowest notes sound a bit flat compared to the rest of the range. Like most alto flutes, it has a C footjoint so can play down to a sounding G3. This model is all silver-plated except for the lip plate, which is solid silver. But you can also choose a curved headjoint or both headjoint styles. Specifically, it was the 201S since I went with a straight headjoint. When I decided to buy an alto flute a few years ago, I settled on a Pearl 201. But they exist, and they could hold you back from getting a good sound and response.Ĭonsider the following alto flute models. I haven’t seen a ton of knock-off alto flutes, or at least not as many as knock-off C flutes. If you want to try the alto flute, you need a good instrument. Some popular solos for the alto flute include Steeples in My Soul by David Bennett Thomas and Two for Two by Katherine Hoover.Ī lot of unaccompanied works for the C flute work on the alto flute as well, including the 12 Fantasias by Telemann. I like to think of it like the viola of a flute choir since it’s between the C flute and bass flute (like the violins and cellos). I’ve played alto in that setting for a few years. The alto flute is also a standard member of flute choirs and flute orchestras. Famous examples include The Planets by Holst and The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. Right now, there isn’t a ton of solo music for the alto, but the repertoire is slowly growing.Īs far as ensemble parts go, there are a few orchestral works that use the alto flute. Playing the alto flute also allows you to play more music. I’ve found that working on these things has helped me play my various flutes. You also have to use more air to produce a sound on the alto flute. Playing the larger flute can help you work on your upper body strength. An alto flute weighs about 2.26 pounds on average, about twice as heavy. The standard C flute weighs about 1.09 to 1.24 pounds, depending on the materials. If you’re struggling to get a good tone down there, trying an alto flute might help. The lower notes of the flute can sound very warm and rich. However, I’ve found that it also helps me play better in the low register on my C flute. Of course, that can help you get a good sound on your alto flute. This forces you to work on your embouchure to produce those lower notes. Improve Your Low Registerīecause the alto flute plays lower than the regular flute, a lot of what you’ll play on the instrument is in the low register. Here are some of my favorite reasons to play the alto flute. The instrument extends the range of notes you can play, so you can explore more music. The alto flute also has a growing number of solos written for it, though the repertoire is still much smaller than that of the C flute.Ī growing number of flute players are starting to learn the alto flute. More recently, the alto flute has become a staple of the flute choir, which consists of C flutes, piccolo, and bass flutes as well. A few composers used it in orchestral works, such as Gustav Holst in The Planets and Igor Stravinsky in The Rite of Spring. Rudall Carte & Co was the first flute company to make an alto flute (known as the Bass Flute in G at the time). It’s a bit tricky at first, but you can enjoy more of the lower notes without as much extra weight, such as with the bass flute. If you prefer the low register of the C flute, I’d recommend learning the alto flute next. Of the four, the bass flute is the only one that’s larger than the alto. The alto is a fourth lower than the C flute, while the piccolo is an octave higher and the bass flute is an octave lower. I use a straight headjoint, but I made sure to buy an alto flute with ergonomic left hand keys that are easier to reach.Ī detailed view of an ergonomic left hand of a flute How It Compares to Other Flutes That can make it difficult to reach the keys, which is why many players use a curved headjoint. Since it sounds lower, the alto flute is also longer and has a bigger bore. The fingerings for the flute and alto flute are the same for all of the written notes, so you don’t have to learn a new set of fingerings. Luckily, most composers will transpose the alto flute parts accordingly. Instead, it’s in the key of G, so it sounds a perfect fourth lower than written. It’s the only common flute that’s not in the key of C. The alto flute is a member of the western concert flute family. Read on to learn more about this low flute. However, it sounds amazing and can be a great next step for flute students. The alto flute is a relatively new member of the flute family. So you start to wonder if it’s time to try the alto flute. You’ve been playing the C flute for a while, and you love the sound of the low register. Linear home ranges of platypuses are typically < 15 km 4, with sporadic long-distance movements 5. Many aspects of platypus biology are increasingly well reported and studied, but movements, including spatial and temporal organisation of individuals, remains poorly understood 4. They are primarily dependent on rivers and other water bodies, feeding exclusively on freshwater macroinvertebrates 2, and using burrows on the water’s edge for resting and nesting 3. Platypuses ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus) occur mainly in creeks and rivers of eastern Australia, with an introduced population on Kangaroo Island 1. Understanding platypus movement behaviour is pertinent for their conservation, as water resource development and habitat modification continue to reduce connectivity between populations across their distribution. Evidence for relatively small movements has implications for declining populations, given areas of localised declines are unlikely to be supplemented by migrating platypuses, especially when dispersal is restricted by dam walls. Increased movements and diurnal activity during winter were primarily driven by males, possibly attributable to breeding behaviours, rather than increased costs of winter foraging. Platypuses moved greater distances on the Mitta Mitta River, possibly associated with impacts of altered flow regimes to their macroinvertebrate diet. Males moved further than females, and larger males had higher cumulative movements, suggesting a possible relationship to metabolic requirements. Platypuses remained relatively localized, occupying 0.73–8.45 km of river over 12 months, consistent with previous tracking studies over shorter periods. We tracked movements of 12 platypuses on the regulated Snowy and Mitta Mitta Rivers for up to 12-months, the longest continuous tracking of platypus using acoustic telemetry. There are gaps in the understanding of platypus movement behaviour within river systems, including spatial and temporal organization of individuals. The platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal, endemic to freshwater habitats of eastern Australia. Project Checklists: Ensure you start and finish your projects in a consistent way, making use of past work. The three habits most important to your Second Brain include: You don't want to delete things, only archive, since that way you will be able to look them up later, and leverage the power of search that most applications have. Though, generally, you will be putting "projects" here. Archive - Is for projects, resources, or areas that are no longer useful to you.For example, "Neuroscience", "Coding", "American History", etc. Resource - Is for general topics that you are interested in, this is where you will put notes, ideas, highlights, that are not most immediate to any of your projects.Area - is for things that don't have an end goal but are ongoing in your life, for example, "Finances", "Cooking", "Journaling", etc.For example, "write a review on 'Building a Second Brain'" Project - is for projects (duh) with a clear end goal in mind.PARA Method is one of the most efficient and simplest method to organize your work accoridng to Tiago. Knowledge is the only resource that gets better and more valuable the more it multiplies. What’s the point of knowing something if it doesn’t positively impact anyone, not even yourself? Learning shouldn’t be about hoarding stockpiles of knowledge like gold coins. Express - The purpose of knowledge is to be shared.Distill - Just saving ideas won't do you any good, you need to activly summarize and imrpove the notes you are taking. For that Tiago proposes the PARA system, discussed later.
After replacing 2 tables twice because people broke them we stopped replacing them. For the table, we use to have 3 tables, and 3 umbrellas. for the pool, i agree we should add some lights and it is in our books for next season. For the ice, we sell the bags, but we also provide buckets for free and we do say it when you ask for ice. We usually turn on the air and the fridge when it is very hot, and I am sorry we did not do it in your room. Our rooms are old, I will not say the contrary, but they are clean. Even if you say you would not come back, i think it is pretty constructive and this will help us narrow down the load of work we have to do for next season and to make you change your mind.
